First Successful Kidney Surgery Through Laparoscopic Method – A New Lease of Life for a Woman Battling Financial Hardship
Raipur : Kondagaon district continues to set new milestones in the field of healthcare, and September 4, 2025, will be remembered as a historic day for the region. For the first time, doctors at the Kondagaon District Hospital successfully performed a kidney surgery using the laparoscopic method. This achievement is not only a landmark for the medical fraternity but also a life-saving blessing for a woman who has long struggled with poverty and illness.
Savitri Koram, a 35-year-old resident of Bazaarpara, Kondagaon, has lived a life of relentless struggle. Following the untimely death of her husband a few years ago, the burden of raising her two sons and two daughters fell solely on her shoulders. To make ends meet, she began working in households as a cleaner and dish-washer. Yet fate dealt another cruel blow when, two years ago, she began suffering from persistent urinary problems.

Gathering her meagre savings, Savitri travelled to Visakhapatnam, where medical tests confirmed a severe kidney disease. Doctors recommended immediate surgery, but the prohibitive cost shattered her hopes. With no financial means, she was forced to return home with incomplete treatment. Amidst the struggle of raising four children, Savitri began to feel her life slipping away.
Kondagaon District Hospital Becomes a Lifeline
In her despair, she turned to Kondagaon District Hospital. After thorough examination, the hospital’s surgeon, Dr. S. Nagulan, and his team confirmed that one of her kidneys was completely damaged and needed removal. Conventional surgery carried risks of large incisions and infection, which posed further challenges for Savitri. At this crucial juncture, Dr. Nagulan made the bold decision to perform the surgery using laparoscopic technique.
According to information provided by the hospital, Savitri underwent surgery on September 4 at the Kondagaon District Hospital. The three-hour operation was conducted by a team led by Dr. S. Nagulan, supported by Dr. Shailesh Kumar, Dr. Anil Devangan, and Dr. Krishna Markam. OT Head Nurse Swapnapriya, along with staff nurses Pushplata Kunwar, Hemant Mandavi, Sanjana Jain, Rameshwari, Archana, Sadhna, and Reena, played a crucial role in the procedure. The damaged kidney was successfully removed, and Savitri is now recovering rapidly.
Expressing her gratitude after the operation, Savitri said, “I once thought poverty and illness had ended my life. But thanks to Kondagaon District Hospital and the Ayushman Card, I have been given a new life.”
Visionary Leadership and Teamwork
This success also reflects the foresight and teamwork of the district administration and health department. Collector Smt. Nupur Rashi Panna has been placing special emphasis on strengthening healthcare facilities in the district. Under the guidance of Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. R.K. Chaturvedi and Civil Surgeon Dr. Prem Mandavi, this historic operation became a reality.
The achievement stands as testimony that under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnudeo Sai, healthcare services in Chhattisgarh are steadily being strengthened. The state government envisions that patients will no longer need to depend on big cities for treatment. In earlier years, people from Bastar had to travel to Visakhapatnam, Raipur, or other cities for major medical procedures. Now, advanced healthcare is being made available at the district level itself. The laparoscopic kidney surgery conducted at Kondagaon District Hospital marks a milestone in this transformative journey.
