Raipur, 20 May 2023 / Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Mr. Bhupesh Baghel, who hails from a farming family, has conceptualized the 'Suraaji Gaon Yojana' for the development and progress of agriculture and rural economy. Under his competent leadership and guidance, Suraaji Gaon Yojana is being implemented rapidly and effectively. Rural economy of the state is being strengthened through innovative schemes such as paddy procurement from farmers, loan waiver, Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana and Godhan Nyay Yojana.

Gauthans are becoming a powerful means of livelihood

Measures for water conservation, animal husbandry, soil health management and nutrition have been combined with the cultural traditions of Chhattisgarh, and with the cooperation of the common people in rural areas of the state, Chhattisgarh Government is taking consolidated steps for conservation and promotion of Narva, Garuva, Ghuruva, Bari under Suraaji Gaon Yojana.

Godhan Nyay Yojana was inaugurated on 20 July 2020, i.e. on the occasion of Hareli festival. Under this scheme, Gauthan committees procure dung at the rate of Rs. 2 per kg in gauthans built under Suraaji Gaon Yojana. The cow-dung so procured is utilized by self-help groups to produce vermicompost, supercompost and supercompost plus in Gauthans. Vermi compost is being sold to farmers at the rate of Rs 10 per kg, super compost at Rs 6 per kg and super compost plus at Rs 6.50 per kg.

Under this scheme, an excellent initiative is being taken to promote organic farming by encouraging the farmers to use dung based organic fertilizers such as vermi compost, super compost in their farms, in place of chemical fertilizers and pesticides that causes pollution of land, water, air, environment. This would also help in reducing the chemical residues in the food chain, improving the overall quality of food products.

Besides dung procurement, manure production and sale, new standards of generating livelihood is being adopted in these gauthans built under Godhan Nyay Yojana. The scheme is boosting and strengthening the rural economy.

In addition to vermicomposting and sale, various types of activities including vegetable production, mushroom spawn, poultry farming, goat rearing, egg production, earthworm production, spice manufacturing, carrybag and dona-patta manufacturing, bakery manufacturing, arhar and flower cultivation are being conducting in these gauthans. The success of livelihood activities in Gauthans of Kurud development block of the district can be gauged from the fact that the self-help group there has earned additional income worth about lakhs of rupees, which is a record in itself. .

Awards one after the another

In a program organized at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Auditorium of Delhi Technology University, New Delhi, Chhattisgarh's Godhan Nyaya Yojana was awarded the E-Governance Award 2022  by Computer Society of India (Special Interest Group on e-Governance). Godhan Nyay Yojana was selected in the 'State and Project' category. It is worth mentioning that Godhan Nyay Yojana has also received "Scotch Gold Award" and National Level Innovation Award" in the past.

The self-supporting Gauthans under Godhan Nyaya Yojana are not only doing their part in cow dung procurement, but are also making steady progress. For the past several fortnights, the share of self-supporting Gauthans in the amount being paid against dung procurement has increased from 60 to 70 percent. At present, more than 50 percent gauthans of the state have become self-supporting, who besides procuring dung and gaumutra, are also conducting livelihood activities from their own funds.

Chief Minister Mr. Bhupesh Baghel will transfer an amount of Rs 13 crore 57 lakh online to the beneficiaries of Godhan Nyaya Yojana at 'Bharose ka Sammelan' to be organized at Sankara Patan in Durg district on May 21. In this program, Rs. 3.95 crore will be paid to rural cattle herders, Rs. 5.66 crore to Gauthan committees and Rs. 3.96 crore to self-help groups, in lieu of 1.98 lakh quintal cow dung procured in Gauthans from May 01 to May 15.

It is noteworthy that under Godhan Nyaya Yojana, Rs 445 crore 14 lakh has been paid to cow dung vendors, Gauthan committees and women self-help groups as on April 30, 2023. After the payment of Rs 13.57 crore on May 21, this figure will increase to Rs 458 crore 71 lakh.
