Elon Musk has put Twitter at risk of having to pay fines worth billions of dollars

San Francisco : A company lawyer said that Elon Musk has put Twitter at risk of having to pay fines worth billions of dollars. In the latest wave of resignations, the chief privacy officer Damien Kieran, the chief information security officer Lea Kissner, and the chief compliance officer Marianne Fogarty all quit.

An attorney on Twitter's privacy team said in a note posted to the company's Slack and seen by The Verge that Musk has shown that his only concern with Twitter users is how to make money off of them.

"I don't think he cares about people who work for human rights. dissidents, our users in places where we can't make money, and all the other users who have made Twitter the global town square you all worked so hard to build and that we all love," the lawyer wrote.

"Everyone here should also know that our CISO, Chief Privacy Officer, and Chief Compliance Officer all quit last night. This news will get lost in the drama about people going back to work. I think that was planned," he said.

The privacy and security teams at Twitter are in a lot of trouble because Musk's changes to the service made its data governance processes obsolete.

The lawyer, whose name was kept secret, "heard Alex Spiro, the current head of Legal, say that Elon is willing to take on a huge amount of risk in relation to this company and its users, because Elon sends rockets into space, he's not afraid of the FTC."

Musk's new legal department is now asking engineers to "self-certify" that they are following FTC rules and other privacy laws, according to a note from a lawyer that was mentioned in a report late Thursday night.

A spokesperson for the FTC said in a statement that the agency was "very worried" about what was going on at Twitter.

"No CEO or company is above the law, and companies have to follow our consent decrees. The FTC spokesperson said, "Our revised consent order gives us new tools to make sure compliance, and we are ready to use them."
