The much-awaited biopic on gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli, starring Arjun Rampal and Aishwarya Rajesh, hit the theatres on September 8.

The film, directed by Ashim Ahluwalia, had great expectations riding on it. Following the film's teasers, Arjun's recounting of his meeting with Gawli and videos showing how the film was shot amidst many troubles, B-Town celebrities and fans had been looking forward to the film.

Making the film was an uphill task from the beginning, with Arjun facing the uphill task of portraying one of Mumbai's most feared gangsters.
Gawli, who is serving a life sentence for the murder of a Shiv Sena politician, did not welcome the idea initially. However, Arjun and Ashim clarified that the film will not be made without 'Daddy's green signal. Gawli's stronghold in Mumbai was the Dagdi Chawl in Byculla, a colony of seven buildings that houses families. The gangster-turned-politician's family still lives there.

Arjun Rampal was last seen in the Vidya Balan starrer 'Kahaani 2', which released in December last year. Ashim Ahluwalia, on the other hand, directed narrative feature film Miss Lovely, which was premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

Here are some of the reactions of Bollywood celebrities to the biopic:

Vicariously, we all are gangsters: Arjun Rampal

New Delhi: “I always wanted to play a gangster,” says National Award winning actor Arjun Rampal, who will be seen portraying real-life don Arun Gawli in ‘Daddy’.

In an exclusive conversation with ANI, the ‘Rock On 2’ star, who is also the producer of the film, revealed why he chose to tell the world, the story of the renowned Mumbai gangsterturned-politician.

“Their world was really cool to go and explore and I think it’s exciting for the audiences to go and see something new and different. As an actor, I love this genre. I always wanted to play a gangster! When Arun Gawli gave his blessings, I was like, it’s perfect,” said the 44-year-old.

Ask him why he ‘always’ wanted to be a gangster and he quickly replies, “Why! Because vicariously, we all are gangsters! And in the film industry, everybody is a gangster!”

“So, you know this world exists, you know all of that does happen. We are just on this side of the fence, there’s a world on that side of the fence too and it looks exciting. It’s not that you want to join it but it will be cool to experience it in a different way.”

Apart from tracing the notorious gangster-turned-politician’s journey, ‘Daddy’ also throws light on the various aspects of the Underworld from the era it is set in – namely the late 80s and 90s.

Helmed by Ashim Ahluwalia, the film also stars South Indian actress Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead role and is all set to release this Friday.

Bollywood songs are losing poetic value: Kumar Sanu

Mumbai: Popular playback artist Kumar Sanu says that he prefers singing for the regional film industry as compared to Bollywood as the quality of lyrics and the poetic value of Hindi film songs have become poor.

Asked about his choice of songs in recent times, Kumar Sanu, a recipient of Padma Shri, told the media on Monday: “These days Hindi film songs mostly have bad lyrics like ‘char bottle Vodka’.”

“Bollywood songs are losing their poetic value. When it comes to the 1990s’ songs, we all can recall them by their beautiful poetry, melody and how soothing they were to the soul.

“These days listening to Hindi songs, mostly, boils your blood. However, in regional film songs, they still value good lyrics.”

Kumar Sanu, who lent his voice to the title track of Sony Entertainment Television’s upcoming show “Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai”, was present at the show’s trailer launch.

He performed live along with singer Sadhana Sargam at the launch.

He, however, said he was not against modern music. “See, change is constant. Music should change. Technically, we have come a long way — matching up to the international standard. It is good.

“But, we have to always remember, songs are based on their melody and lyrics. I am not saying these days people are not making good songs. They are doing it. But it is two songs out of 10 whereas in the 1990s, good film songs used to be nine out of 10! That’s the difference.”

The singer performed some of his popular numbers like “Mera dil bhi kitna pagal hai”, “Saanson ki zarurat hai jaise” and “Jab koi baat bigad jaye” along with the title track of the show. It is composed by Anu Malik.

Produced by Shashi Sumeet Productions, the story of “Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai” is about a teenage love story set in the 1990s when gadgets had not invaded the youngster’s world.

The show will premiere on Tuesday.

After Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan, it is Tiger Shroff’s turn to say no to villainy roles

More and more screen heroes are determined to project a squeaky-clean image off screen. After Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan who refused to indulge in screen villainy, it is Tiger Shroff who won’t do negative roles.

“I’ve to think of the young people who come to watch films. A lot of them look up to us; expect us to set an example. They follow the clothes we wear, the way we talk and behave. It is very important to be correct in our behaviour towards women, children and elders,” says Tiger.

He will, therefore, not play negative or grey characters. “I’d rather play positive people. I am a pretty positive person in real life. I’d want to project that positivity in the roles that I play,” says Tiger.

I take criticism, praise in same way, says Kalki Koechlin

New Delhi: During her initial days in showbiz, she used to get upset over negative reviews, criticism and social media trolls. However, actress Kalki Koechlin says while surviving in the industry for over a decade, she has now become a “veteran” when it comes to handling comments and compliments.

“I used to get affected by it (being in limelight) when I started my career. I used to get upset about criticism or a troll. Even if I used to get a thousand compliments, I only used to remember that one comment that criticised me. Somewhere it’s human nature… We tend to do that,” Kalki told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Actors can’t be role models for every issue: Kalki Koechlin
“But with experience, now I let it go. I have been here for a decade now so, now I am like a veteran. Now I take criticism and praise in the same way… I look at them in a constructive way, something that can help me learn and evolve.

“Sometimes there are also moments when I say ‘No, I don’t want to hear all this, I am going to switch off from social media and focus on whatever I am doing at that time’. Ultimately, your work speaks for yourself,” she added.

The 33-year-old is best known for portraying unconventional characters onscreen. She ventured into filmdom with “Dev D” and went on to play critically acclaimed roles in films like “Shaitan”, “That Girl in Yellow Boots”, “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”, “My Friend Pinto”, “Margarita with a Straw”, “Waiting” and more.

After Konkana Sen Sharma’s “A Death in the Gunj”, Kalki is now looking forward to her maiden web series and her upcoming film “Ribbon”.

“It’s a 12-episode series on the Goan mafia. I play a Goan-Portuguese DJ. Also, I have just finished a film called ‘Ribbon’, which has been directed by Rakhee Sandilya. She is making her debut. She earlier made a documentary on surrogacy. The film shows how difficult it is for an urban couple to keep up the pace in today’s modern world and bring up a child,” Kalki said.

Asked about the growing demand of web series in India, Kalki said: “There is no doubt that web is taking over. That’s the new form of technology. We have to embrace it and evolve with it. I watch a lot of stuff online all the time. It’s a free platform where we get to see content which we can’t see on our TV or in cinemas so often. I love it.”

However, she added that people are still keen about watching films and TV shows.

“But I don’t think it means that besides web, everything else will disappear. People are still very social creatures and they still want to go and have an outing to the cinema or to go and watch a rock concert,” she said.

“It (web) gives you freedom. The web is a wonderful place to express opinions and voices which are otherwise not always expressed, but people also can overuse that freedom. That’s also the negative side of it like trolling — that’s repercussion of this technology,” she added.

Being in the acting profession, Kalki likes to maintain a balance between her professional and personal life.

“Personally, I believe in the law of Newton — Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. So, you can’t appreciate silence without noise. I want to be out there in the limelight and get my work seen. But I also value my time alone or with family. I like to have a balance of both.”

Did Amrita Singh lash out at Saif Ali Khan over comments on Sara’s Bollywood debut?

Star kids and their parents are currently the hot topic of discussion amongst gossip mongers. B-town parents are nowadays much concerned about their respective kids. After Sridevi, Saif Ali Khan made a comment on his daughter Sara Ali Khan. However, his comment on Sara, apparently made his ex-wife and Sara’s mother, Amrita Singh, angry.

It is being reported that Amrita blasted Saif, saying she did not appreciate his comments. According to a report in DNA, a source disclosed what actually happened. The source says, “She told him it was an irresponsible thing to say considering Sara is about to embark on a film career.” After all, Amrita wants to make Sara a big Bollywood actress. And this is perhaps why Saif’s statement didn’t gone down well with Sara’s mother.

Saif Ali Khan’s 2005 interview on split with Amrita Singh is full of shocking claims
The source further added, “Saif didn’t want to be dragged into an argument, so he mumbled that he was ‘quoted out of context’ and calmed down his former wife.” Moreover, things didn’t end here as after completing a phone call, Saif attended a press conference and as expected, he was asked about his daughter’s much-talked debut.

Spot the difference! Sara Ali Khan is a spitting image of mother Amrita Singh
According to, in the press conference, the actor clarified the whole statement saying that, “I love my daughter, support her and I think her choice is great. Of course, she is an actress, she belongs to a family of artistes, which is great, but I am still a little concerned for her as it is an unsure profession. Because I love her, I worry for her. That’s all I am saying. Is that clear? People write things like, ‘He doesn’t know what he is saying. He doesn’t know his mind.’ I find that annoying.”

Reportedly, Sara Ali Khan will be seen opposite Sushant Singh Rajput in ‘Kedarnath’ which will be directed by Abhishek Kapoor.
