Odisha seeks Rs 17,000 cr aid

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik sought help of Rs 17,000 crore from the Center on Monday in view of the devastation caused by the cyclone in the state.

In a review meeting organized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Cyclone Phani, Patnaik demanded Rs 10,000 crore for the restoration of the structures affected by the disaster.

They demanded Rs 7,000 crore for transforming five lakh raw houses into permanent homes and for disaster telecom network.

The Chief Minister said, "We have set a global standard for saving lives and now we should start work on setting up a global standard to enable coastal Odisha to compete with the disaster."

Earlier, Odisha was affected by cyclone Phillian in 2013, Hudhud in 2014, Drought in 2015 and Cyclone Butterfly in 2018.

The Odisha government gave detailed presentations about the damage caused by the cyclonic storm. Cyclone Fani had wreaked havoc on the coastal districts on May 3.

The Center released a sum of Rs 381 crore for the state after the storm. On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an additional fund of Rs 1,000 crore to Odisha.
