Development, Hindutva, Nationalism! NCP chief Sharad Pawar talks about various narratives used by PM Modi to woo voters

NCP chief Sharad Pawar feels that PM Modi sought votes in the names of armed forces and their sacrifice. Pawan, in an interview with Mumbai Mirror, was quoted about his opinion about PM Modi and Lok Sabha Elections 2019.  Pawar said that PM Modi used different narratives to woo voters for votes. He said that Modi used Armed Forces to seek votes in upcoming general elections. ‘PM started seeking votes in the name of the armed forces and the sacrifices they made. We are proud of the armed forces and appreciate what they do. There are no two opinions about it”, he said.

Pawar also said that no is against nationalism but PM bought this narrative in this election. “Pakistan released IAF pilot Abhinandan Varthaman as per the Geneva Conventions. They could not keep him. But Modi and his team are claiming credit for the release. The PM brought in a nationalism narrative. But who is against nationalism? These are not election issues. This is the difference between the last and this election”, he said.

Giving an account of other different narratives used by PM Modi to woo voters, Pawar said that PM came up with narrative of development to get Prime Minister’s post in 2014. When the development deteriorated over the years, he started the Hindutva narrative.

“In 2014, the UPA government completed 10 years. Narendra Modi projected himself as the prime ministerial candidate and came up with a narrative of development. He promoted Gujarat as the model. Ultimately, people thought of giving him a chance and he succeeded. But today, the overall growth rate has dropped. In the past two years, 11,998 farmers have committed suicide, unemployment has increased, the youth are unhappy with him, industrial growth has come down. His performance has not been up to the mark. But he is not referring to these issues at all. Instead, he has started the Hindutva narrative,” Pawar said.

Pawar also opined that with Hindutva ideology, PM Modi has not observed the sanctity of his post. “Modi took oath as the prime minister of India. He swore to defend the Constitution and each and every citizen of the country. He is not the prime minister of the BJP. He has not observed the sanctity of his post. Hindu, Muslim, Christian or Jain – they are all Indian citizens”, he said.
