Doc who helped CIA track Laden shifted

Peshawar : Shakil Afridi, a doctor who helped the US’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) track down Osama Bin Laden and is serving a jail term, has been shifted to an unknown location from the central jail here due to security reasons, a senior official said on Saturday. Afridi ran a fake vaccination drive in Abbottabad city to help CIA agents track the former Al-Qaeda chief, who was later killed by US Navy Seals in a controversial raid on May 2, 2011. A year later, Afridi was sentenced to 33 years in prison by a court for being involved in anti-state activities.

A senior prison official of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), who did not want to identified, confirmed that Afridi was shifted from the Peshawar jail but said he was unaware about his new location. The KP government had earlier informed the Federal government about a threat to Afridi’s life in Peshawar prison, where militants of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan had also been kept.

According to a media report, the doctor had been shifted to Adiala Jail in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

Dalmia Bharat Group wins historic Rs 25 crore bid contract to maintain Red Fort

The Dalmia Group has adopted the Red Fort, one of India’s most prominent historic monuments. According to Business Standard, the Dalmia Group has bagged the contract for Rs 25 crore after beating IndiGo Airlines and the GMR group. It won the prestigious contract under the Indian government’s ‘adopt a heritage’ scheme.

The project is a key initiative of Ministry of Tourism in close collaboration with Ministry of Culture and Archeological Survey of India (ASI), to develop the heritage sites/monuments and making them tourist-friendly to enhance the tourism potential and their cultural importance in a planned and phased manner.

Talking about the ‘Adopt a heritage’ scheme, the project plans to entrust heritage sites and other tourist sites to private sector companies, public sector companies and individuals for the development of tourist amenities. The scheme was launched by the president on September 17, 2017, following which various companies volunteered to adopt the monument.

Meanwhile, under this scheme, the Dalmia Group will provide drinking water kiosks, street furniture-like benches and shop signage within six months. It will then have to put up upgrade toilets, light up the Red Fort pathways and bollards, tactile maps, restore work and landscaping, build a 1,000-square-foot visitor facility centre, 3-D projection mapping of the Red Fort’s interior and exterior, battery-operated vehicles and charging stations for such vehicles and a thematic cafeteria within a year.

The conglomerate may also charge people visiting the Red Fort after getting clearances from the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism. Any revenue generated through the activities planned will have to be used for the Fort’s development and maintenance.

The heritage monuments taken up for ‘adoption’ by private groups include Delhi’s Qutub Minar, Jantar Mantar, Purana Qila, Safdarjung’s Tomb and Agrasen ki Baoli, Odisha’s Sun Temple, Ratnagiri monuments and the Rajarani temple, the ruins of Hampi in Karnataka, the Leh Palace and Stok Kangri in Jammu & Kashmir, Anjanta and Ellora caves in Maharashtra, Mattancherry Place in Kochi, Gangotri Temple and the Gomukh trail in Uttarakhand.

“Good days will come”, says convicted godman Asaram in viral audio clip

Jodhpur: A purported audio clip of Asaram, serving his life-in-prison term at a Jodhpur jail, has surfaced online in which the self-styled godman is heard telling a person over phone that his time behind bars is ephemeral and “good days will come”.

According to Jodhpur Central Jail DIG Vikram Singh, the 15-minute audio clip might have been recorded during a telephone conversation Asaram had on Friday, two days after a Jodhpur court found him guilty and sentenced him to life in prison for raping a teenage girl in his ashram five years ago.

The call was made with permission from jail authorities. “Inmates are permitted to make a call over any two given numbers for 80 minutes in a month. He had spoken to a ‘sadhak’ at Sabarmati Ashram on Friday at 6.30 pm. May be this communication was recorded (then) and made viral,” said Singh.

In a one-way communication which appeared like a telephonic sermon, Asaram first extended his gratitude to his followers for maintaining calm and not coming to Jodhpur on the day of judgment. “We should respect the law and order and the system. I also do so,” he is purportedly heard saying in the audio clip. He claims a few people are on a campaign to defame his ashram and want to take its control.

“Do not get carried away by such provocations or anything circulated on the letter head of ashram…,” he says in the clip. Referring to co-accused Shilpi and Sharat Chanda, who were handed down 20-year jail terms by the special court, Asaram says he would first arrange for their release from jail “as it is the duty of parents to first think about their children”. “(Even if) more advocates will be required for the release of Shilpi and Sharat, that will be done. Afterwards, bapu will make way out of the jail,” he says.

“If a mistake has happened in the lower court, there are upper courts for rectifying those mistakes,” he says. “Truth has no cover and lie has no legs (to stand upon)… It is immaterial, what the allegations are,” he says, adding, “good days will come”. At the end of the conversation, he makes Sharat to speak, who says there’s nothing to be worried about in the jail.

DGCA sets-up 2 member panel to probe Rahul Gandhi’s flight snag

New Delhi/Bangalore: The country’s civil aviation regulator on Friday said that it has set up a two-member panel to investigate into the cause of a snag reported in the aircraft which ferried Congress President Rahul Gandhi to Hubballi in Karnataka on Thursday.

According to a senior official with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)  a “Falcon 2000 aircraft VT-AVH was involved in an incident while operating flight” from New Delhi to Hubballi. “Operator has reported the incident to DGCA. As per operator report, it was snag of autopilot mode and pilot shifted to manual mode and aircraft landed safely. Autopilot failure incidents are not uncommon,” a senior DGCA official told IANS in New Delhi.

Plane carrying Rahul Gandhi develops technical snag before landing at Hubballi airport, Congress demands probe
“For any VIP flight DGCA investigates thoroughly. DGCA has set up a two member committee.”  However, Hubballi Airport Director Ahilya S. Kakodikar said that no complaint has been received from the pilot of an aircraft which reportedly developed a snag when Gandhi was flying in it on Thursday. “Neither the pilot nor the air traffic control (ATC) complained to me about the snag,” Hubballi airport Director Ahilya S. Kakodikar told reporters.

The director of the airport, which is managed by the state-run Airports Authority of India (AAI), also stressed that the aircraft had landed safely. “It was a safe landing. In case of any abnormalities, the ATC would have recorded it,” she said. The Congress on Thursday complained to the Karnataka Police that the Falcon 2000 aircraft in which Gandhi and four others flew to Hubballi, about 400km northwest of state capital Bengaluru, from Delhi had suffered a mid-air snag.

The complaint, addressed to the state’s Director General of Police Neelamani N. Raju, requested the state police chief to “ground” the aircraft at Hubballi and investigate the malfunction. Based on the complaint by Congress official Shakir Sanadi, the police in Hubballi lodged a First Information Report late on Thursday. Gandhi arrived in Hubballi around 11.25 a.m. on Thursday on a two-day visit to the state to launch the party’s campaign for the May 12 assembly elections.

Wuhan Summit: India, China to Team Up For Joint Economic Project in Afghanistan; Move May Upset Pakistan

Wuhan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to undertake a joint India-China economic project in Afghanistan at their first informal summit here, official sources said.

The move may not be well-received in Pakistan, which claims Beijing as an “all-weather” ally.

The understanding was reached between the two leaders during the two-day informal summit which concluded on Saturday, they said. As per the understanding, officials of both sides will identify the project in following up discussions and work out modalities.

This will be a first such project in the war-torn country where China, while trying to expand its influence, has tacitly backed Pakistan, which has been accused by Afghanistan and the US of backing the Taliban and its most violent attacks in the country destabilising any attempts to restore peace.

China for the first time held a trilateral meeting with the foreign ministers of Pakistan and Afghanistan in December last in Beijing to narrow down the differences between the two countries.

China had also announced plans to extend its controversial China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Afghanistan at the meeting.

Following their museum visit, PM Modi presented to Xi the reprints of two paintings made by Xu Beihong, a famous Chinese artist during his stay at Santiniketan between 1939 and 1940.

Xu was known for his Chinese ink paintings of horses and birds. He was one of the first Chinese artists to articulate the need for artistic expressions that reflected a modern China at the beginning of the 20th century. The paintings depicted a horse and sparrows on grass.

Simultaneous Polls Doable But Not This Year, Says Chief Election Commissioner

New Delhi: As the debate over ‘one nation, one poll’ continues, the Election Commission says that it will be capable of holding simultaneous elections within “a few months” of legal changes made to existing framework.

Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat has, however, ruled out early Lok Sabha polls in December this year with four other states citing paucity of time in getting “first level checks” in the VVPAT machines to be used in all future polls.

“Machines have to be supplied till September end. It would not be possible to get first level check in such a short time,” Rawat told News18 in an exclusive interview.

Elections to four state assemblies, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Mizoram and Chattisgarh will vote to elect a new government later this year for which VVPATS are to be deployed. The ECE, however, made it clear that the commission would be prepared to hold five state assembly elections with Lok Sabha polls slated for May 2019.

"Once the necessary changes are made in the Representation of People’s Act, not much time is required to hold simultaneous elections. We will then need to make arrangements for adequate EVM’s and Central Paramilitary Forces for the purpose," Rawat added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has on numerous occasions underscored the need to hold simultaneous polls in the country to cut down on repeated election expenditure. The issue also found mention in President Ramnath Kovind’s address to the joint session of parliament earlier this year.

This month the Law commission of India has also deliberated on the issue in its last meeting in Delhi.

Amit Shah Mocks Siddaramaiah Over 2-Seat Contest, Says CM 'Running Away'

Bengaluru: BJP president Amit Shah took a dig at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for deciding to contest from two constituencies in the upcoming assembly elections, saying the person on whom the Congress was dependent was 'running away' and looking for a safer seat.

"The Congress depends on Siddaramaiah in this assembly election. He himself is running away from the Chamundeshwari assembly constituency to the Badami assembly constituency. How much can you escape? Our candidate B Sriramulu will defeat you," he said at a public rally at Gangavathi in Koppal district on Friday.

Referring to Congress President Rahul Gandhi posing questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on national issues during his ongoing two-day campaign in the state,he said the ruling Congress should answer questions on its performance.

"I have come here to answer your (Rahul) questions.... it is your party's turn to answer because this is an assembly election in a state which your party ruled for five years," Shah said.

He said his party would give an account of every Rupee spent when its five year tenure ends and the Lok Sabha elections are held in 2019. He then asked the people whether they had 24-hour electricity, jobs, minimum support price for farmers and especially for sugarcane grown in abundance in Gangavathi, to which the crowd responded in the negative.

Shah then quipped that Siddaramaiah has some 'achievements' to his credit. "Siddaramaiah has made Karnataka a number one state in farmers' suicides, atrocities on women, unemployment and corruption," he said.

The BJP president also took a jibe at the chief Minister once sporting a Rs 40 lakh watch, saying he had not yet answered where he got it from and who gifted it to him.

Mired in a controversy over the luxury watch gifted to him, Siddaramaiah had on March 2, 2016 handed it over to the Speaker, declaring it a state asset. Shah said Karnataka had received Rs 88,583 crore grants under the 13th Finance Commission when the UPA government was in power.

"But under the Modi government, the 14th Finance Commission released a grant of Rs 2.2 lakh crore for various development works. Apart from it, another Rs 80,000 crore was given under various schemes," he said and wondered where all this money had gone.

Shah said people had only to compare the lifestyles of any Congress leader five years ago to the present day to see for themselves where the money had gone.

"Those grants fell prey to the prevailing corruption in Karnataka," said Shah.

The BJP leader then dwelt on the various welfare schemes introduced by the Modi government, including Ujjwala scheme, and enhancing of MSP, and urged the people to choose a committed government over a 'commission government' Modi had described the Congress government in Karnataka as '10 per cent commission government'.

Shah, who kick-started yet another round of his election campaign in the state, visited Gavi Siddeshwara Math in Koppal and took the blessings of its seer Abhinava Gavisiddeshwara Swamiji.

He also addressed a public meeting at Kukoor under the Yelburga assembly constituency of Koppal, where he denounced Rahul Gandhi for showing 'disrespect' for the national song "Vande Mataram, "which anchored our freedom movement and for which so many Indians sacrified their lives".

A controversy erupted tonight after a video purportedly showing Gandhi "disrespecting" national song 'Vande Mataram' at a public rally here surfaced and went viral.

The Congress had dubbed it as a 'fake video'. It showed Gandhi sitting on the dias with senior Congress leaders, including Siddaramaiah, and pointing to his watch gesturing something to AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka affairs K C Venugopal, apparently to wrap up quickly.

A person is then heard telling the singer to "just sing a line (of Vande Matram) and finish it off". As the singer began singing "vande mataram", Venugopal is seen nudging Gandhi to stand up.

@FarOutAkhtar
So, Asaram is a child rapist. And he has been found guilty. Good.

But can people please stop sharing images of him with PM Modi. Patronising him before he was exposed to be a pervert is no crime.

Let’s be fair and give him the benefit of doubt that he, like us, did not know.
