Madhya Pradesh: Candidates appearing for constable’s post marked with caste on their chest

Dhar: There is another obnoxious story from MP – this time of caste profiling. Several candidates appearing for a medical test for constable’s post in Dhar allegedly had ‘SC’ written on their chests in a bid to identify them according to their castes.

Photographs of this unusual medical test procedure have gone viral. The pictures show the candidates standing with their caste status written on the chests.  Madhya Pradesh Police have condemned the incident and Dhar Superintendent of Police Birendra Kumar denied issuing any such order. There were no such orders from the police. We have ordered an inquiry to find out how it happened and the guilty would be punished, he said.

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Bhupendra Singh has also ordered an inquiry into the incident. Union minister Ramdas Athawale said, “Writing the caste on the chest of candidates is wrong and I will write to the CM. An inquiry should be conducted and action would also be taken.” Interestingly, several Madhya Pradesh districts, including Gwalior, Bhind and Morena, had witnessed massive protests by Dalit groups against alleged moves to dilute the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act during the Bharat Bandh on April 2.
