Cyclone Fani Live Updates: 59 flights cancelled in Guwahati, 8 in Agartala, 2 in Dimapur, 2 in Lilabari, 4 in Dibrugarh and 6 in Imphal

Cyclone Fani, one of the strongest storms to batter the Indian subcontinent in decades, entered West Bengal post midnight on Saturday, hours after making landfall and causing havoc in Odisha on Friday. According to the Meteorological department, the extremely severe cyclonic storm relatively weakened after entering coastal Odisha and transformed into “very severe” as it approached Bengal. The cyclonic story crossed Kharagpur and is likely to continue further in North-East direction with a wind speed of 90 km/hour.

Wind gusting at over 100 kmph, accompanied by heavy rains, Fani lashed cities and towns in coastal Bengal including Digha, Mandarmani, Tajpur and Contai while the effects of the storm could also be felt in cities like Kharagpur and Burdwan as trees were uprooted and metal hoardings gave way.

4.42 pm: Airports Authority of India, North Eastern Regional Headquarters: 59 flights cancelled in Guwahati, 8 in Agartala, 2 in Dimapur, 2 in Lilabari, 4 in Dibrugarh, 6 in Imphal.

3.59 pm: Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu Saturday appealed to industry chambers to organise relief operations for helping people affected by Cyclone Fani.

2.13 pm: Air India has announced additional flight today (Delhi-Bhubaneswar at 1500 hrs and Bhubaneswar-Delhi at 1745 hrs) for passengers stranded due to cyclonic storm Fani.

12:40 pm: At least 12 have been killed across Bangladesh due to the cyclonic storm Fani, which is expected to stay over the country until 4 pm today. Speaking to The Daily Star, Shamsuddin Ahmed, the director of Bangladesh Meteorological Department said that the cyclone eye was located west of Dhaka on Saturday morning, according to ANI report.

At present, the cyclone, which is situated at Shantipur in Nadia district about 60 km north of Kolkata, is likely to enter Bangaldesh around Saturday noon.

10.30 am: Air India on Saturday announces the recommencement of operation from 9.45 am at Kolkata Airport. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered the cancellation of all flights to and from Bhubaneswar and Kolkata airports due to cyclone Fani on Thursday.
