On a disastrous night for La Liga, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid both lost and were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League, with Barca going down and Atletico being held at home to a draw.

Barcelona was eliminated from the Champions League and relegated to the Europa League as Inter Milan defeated Viktoria Plzen 4-0 at home.

Barcelona fell to Bayern Munich 3-0 at home. The Spanish club outplayed by the Germans for the majority of the match and failing to manage a single shot on goal.

Bayern took the lead in the tenth minute on the play of Sadio Mane, and just after the half-hour mark, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting doubled their advantage.

Barca huffed and puffed without causing Bayern serious problems, and Benjamin Pavard netted the third goal with the last kick of the game following a corner.

Meanwhile, Porto’s win away to Club Brugge meant that anything other than a win for Atletico at home to Bayer Leverkusen would also see their Champions League adventure come to an end for this season.

There was high drama in Atletico’s match, especially in the final minute, reports Xinhua.

Atletico failed to score from a corner and the referee blew the final whistle when the score was 2-2. But then the referee received a call from VAR over a possible penalty for the Spanish side.

Leverkusen scored first through Moussa Diaby, and Atletico responded by Carrasco in the 22nd minute.

Although Rodrigo de Paul brought Atletico to within one goal of Leverkusen early in the second half, they were unable to find a winner, even from the penalty spot. Callum Hudson-Odoi restored Leverkusen’s advantage in the 29th minute.

In order to guarantee their spot in the Europa League, Atletico must now match Leverkusen’s performance from the final group game.

Melbourne, Oct 24 (PTI) Arshdeep Singh had "sleepless nights" after dropping a sitter against Pakistan during Asia Cup but a healthy a team environment allowed the young Indian left-arm pacer to move on from that and produce a game changing performance against the arch-rivals in the T20 World Cup.

The 23-year-old was subjected to severe criticism following the dropped catch in a Super 4 game of Asia Cup last month and some event went to the extent of calling him a "Khalistani". "The team atmosphere is so good that we don't let the outside noise get in. We enjoy each other's company, stand for each other in bad times.

It really helps," Arshdeep told media at the mixed zone after India pulled off a thrilling four-wicket win over Pakistan in their World Cup opener here on Sunday.

Cummins replaces Finch as Australia's new ODI captain

Melbourne, Oct 18 (PTI) Pace spearhead Pat Cummins was on Tuesday named as Australia's new ODI captain following Aaron Finch's retirement from the format last month.

The Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed that Cummins, 29, will lead Australia in next year's ODI World Cup in India.

Cummins beat the likes of Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell March and Alex Carey to be appointed as Australia's 27th ODI skipper.

Cummins will become the first fast bowler to lead Australia's men's team in white-ball cricket. CA, though, are yet to announce a vice-captain for the ODI side.

"Pat (Cummins) has done an excellent job since taking on the captaincy of the Test side and we look forward to him leading the one-day team to the 2023 World Cup in India," said Australia's chief selector George Bailey.

David Warner was not considered for the job as his lifetime leadership ban still remains with Cricket Australia contemplating a change in its code of conduct.

The 29-year-old Cummins is already in charge of Australia's Test side after he was appointed to that role last year. Finch will continue to lead the T20 team.

Australia's next ODI assignment is against against England next month -- a three match series.

Mehdi Taremi’s second-half brace paved the way for Porto’s 3-0 away victory over Bayer Leverkusen in UEFA Champions League Group B.

Bayern Munich, Club Brugge and Napoli secured last-16 spots on a night of high drama in Europe on Wednesday night that brought the fastest-ever Champions League hat-trick courtesy of Mohamed Salah. They joined Manchester City and Real Madrid who have also made it to the last 16.

Salah was at his devastating best as former champions Liverpool continued to prosper as they thrashed Rangers 7-1 in a Group A encounter. In other matches on Wednesday night, Napoli overcame Ajaz 4-2 in another Group A match.

French club Marseille defeated Sporting Lisbon 2-0, Tottenham Hotspur overcame Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 and Bayern Munich defeated Viktoria 4-2.

Porto made a fairy-tale start on the road and stunned Leverkusen with the opener in the sixth minute as Galeno finished off a solo run from 10 metres into the bottom corner.

Leverkusen responded well and had a golden chance to restore parity in the 16th minute, but Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved Kerem Demirbay’s penalty.

Costa was also on guard at the half-hour mark when he neutralised a close-range attempt from Mitchel Bakker.

The Werkself remained on the front foot but were unlucky moments later when Patrik Schick’s goal was disallowed due to a handball.

After the restart, Xabi Alonso’s men started where they left off as Amine Adli unleashed a dangerous shot on target in the 49th minute.

Adli remained in the thick of things as he felled Galeno inside the box to concede a penalty. Taremi stepped up and kept his nerves after beating Lukas Hradecky with a chip into the center of the goal in the 53rd minute.

Things went from bad to worse at the hour mark as the referee pointed to the penalty spot again after Odilon Kossounou fouled Galeno inside the area. Taremi showed no mercy and wrapped up his brace off the left-hand post.

Leverkusen pressed for a consolation, but Schick missed the target from 11 meters before Costa was equal to Moussa Diaby’s hammer in the closing stages.

“The defeat hurts. We made mistakes but the result doesn’t reflect our performance. We are really disappointed of course. Porto played very smartly. They took an early lead and defended well. We had our chance that is also why the defeat is a real pity,” said Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.

“We controlled the game and made the most of our opportunities,” said Porto striker Taremi.

Salah tricks into record books

Salah came off the bench to score the fastest-ever Champions League hat trick as Liverpool ran riot in Glasgow. The home side actually took the lead when Scott Arfield finished off a fine team move, but Roberto Firmino levelled and after the break, it was all Liverpool.

Firmino tucked in Joe Gomez’s cross before teeing up Darwin for the third. That was Darwin’s final touch as he was replaced by Salah, who duly scored three in a shade over six minutes. Harvey Elliott added a late seventh.

Salah’s three-goal salvo came in the space of six minutes and 12 seconds, beating Gomis’s eight-minute hat-trick in another 7-1 win back in 2011, for Lyon at Dinamo.

Bayern on top

Four goals in 35 first-half minutes effectively sealed Bayern’s passage to the knockout stages. Sadio gave the visitors an early lead and Thomas soon tapped in the second.

Leon Goretzka added a double, the first a sweeping finish and the second a calm chip over the goalkeeper, as Bayern took full control. Adam Vlkanova and Jan Kliment scored in the second half to lift the Plzen fans but the night belonged to Bayern.

London (agency ): Sunday, Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League standings with a 3-2 victory over Liverpool, aided by a brace from Bukayo Saka, as Liverpool twice battled back from a goal deficit.

Gabriel Martinelli gave the Gunners the lead in the first minute, setting the tone for an intense match.

Midway through the half, Liverpool responded with a goal by Darwin Nunez, but deep into first-half stoppage time, Bukayo Saka restored Arsenal's lead with a swift counterattack. At the time of the halftime break, Arsenal was leading 2-1 at the Emirates.

Saka scored from the penalty spot after Gabriel Jesus was fouled to secure a massive three points and send Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League.

There were only 58 seconds remaining on the clock when Arsenal scored. Midway within their own half, William Saliba won the ball and initiated a counterattack. The Gunners overloaded Liverpool on the left flank, Martin Odegaard slipped the ball through to Martinelli, who expertly tucked the ball home while evading the offside trap.

Aakarshi won the first set easily by 21-8. In the second set, Aakarshi managed to win the second gold medal for Chhattisgarh, defeating her opponent by 22-20. Earlier, Aakarshi had won the semifinals by defeating Tanya Hemant of Karnataka by 21-13, 21-15.

In the 36th National Games held in Gujarat, the players of Chhattisgarh have won 7 medals so far. This includes two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals. IOC releases first visual identity to bolster Olympic brand’s core values

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has released its first-ever visual identity in order to bring the Olympic brand and its core values to life, the IOC announced on Wednesday.

This new visual system has been created to bolster the Olympic brand’s core values, while enhancing consistency, recognition and impact across all IOC platforms, communications and publications, the IOC said via a media release.

“The IOC recognised the need to create a comprehensive foundational identity, designed for use across all mediums and channels,” the release said.

The full brand rollout is expected to be completed by the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The modern Olympics are widely known with the five Olympic rings — blue, black, red, yellow and green, which was designed by Pierre de Coubertin in 1913, but the latest evolution is aiming to bring the legacy of the games into the modern world.

“The evolved brand pushes further the Olympic brand identity through a vibrant extended palette based on the Olympic colours, inspirational illustrations and tailor-made typography,” said May Guerraoui, Head of Brand Management at the IOC. “It’s about leveraging a new design system to communicate the brand values with emotion.”

The new design system, created by Canadian agency Hulse & Durrell and a team of international artists, typographers and designers, features three custom-made typefaces, a series of graphic devices, 17 illustrations and a set of guidelines for how to incorporate the identity.

“Every element has been designed to reflect the hopeful, universal, inclusive, vibrant and progressive qualities of the Olympic brand, for use across publications, digital, environment design and more,” the IOC release said.

Australia vice-captain Rachel Haynes announces retirement from international cricket

Melbourne,/(PTI) Australian women's cricket team star batter and vice- captain Rachel Haynes on Thursday announced her retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtains down on an illustrious career.

The 35-year-old southpaw, who made her international debut back in 2009, represented her country in six Tests, 77 ODIs, and 84 T20Is.

"To all the teammates across my career, you are the reason I've played as long as I have. You've inspired me to be better every day. I've learnt something from all of you, on and off the field," Haynes said in a statement.

"You've challenged me as a player, helped me grow as a person and most importantly, made cricket fun," she added.

Haynes is the ninth highest run-getter for Australia in both the limited overs formats, having scored 2585 runs in ODIs at an average of 39.76 and 850 runs in T20Is, averaging 26.56.

She has served as Australia's vice-captain since 2018. Since then, Australia have bagged three World Cups -- one 50-over and two T20 -- and also a gold medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games this year.

"One of the great things about having a long career is watching those around you develop. I'm extremely proud of the way this team has brought players in and nurtured their development," she said.

"The ability to help players transition smoothly has been instrumental to our team's success. To be a leader within this environment has been the greatest privilege of my career," she added.

Haynes, however, will continue to play in the Women's Big Bash League with the Sydney Thunder from next month but will not be part of the New South Wales team's domestic campaign, starting next week.

Deggie Cardozo, the Goa gaffer despite fielding a relatively inexperienced side opted for an attacking 4-3-3 formation to begin the game, while Mohammedan went the regulation 4-4-2 with Trinidadian Marcus upfront with the young Rahul Paswan.

However, it was the Gaurs who drew first blood when just over the half-hour mark, Nemil found himself with some space just outside the box and completely wrong-footed the keeper Shankar Roy with a delectable chipped shot on the turn.

The second half was all Mohammedan as Pritam Singh found a loose ball inside the box after the Goa custodian had parried away a Sk Faiaz cross. He made no mistake.

Mohammedan continued to attack and Marcus in particular missed a few gilt-edged opportunities. Then Chernyshov made an inspired double substitution bringing in Abhash Thapa and Faslu Rahman with just over 10 minutes of the game left.

The two subs combined effectively as Man of the Match Faslu got at the end of an Abhash cross and Mohammedan were well on their way to avenge last year’s final defeat. Then with the game in stoppage time, Marcus tapped in from close to make it 3-1 to the joy of the 30,000 odd local supporters in the stadium.

The game was preceded by an opening ceremony where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was the Chief Guest. There were Army Bands on display and singers Papon and Rewben Mashangwa rendered the tournament theme song, before the Chief Guest was introduced to the players and support staff of both teams.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been suspended by FIFA, the world’s governing body of football, “immediately owing to improper influence from third parties,” endangering the country’s hosting of the U-17 Women’s World Cup in October.

Up till the ban is lifted, the AIFF won’t be able to compete in any international matches.

“The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes,” stated an official media release, issued by FIFA.

When the order to establish a committee of administrators to take over the duties of the AIFF Executive Committee has been revoked and the AIFF administration has complete control over the organisation’s daily operations, it was said that the suspension would be lifted.

“The suspension means that the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022, scheduled to take place in India on 11-30 October 2022, cannot currently be held in India as planned,” the statement further read.

FIFA is assessing the next steps with regard to the tournament and will refer the matter to the Bureau of the Council if and when necessary. “FIFA is in constant constructive contact with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India and is hopeful that a positive outcome to the case may still be achieved.”

The 24-year-old Chopra, who had entered the showpiece as a hot medal favourite in javelin throw, produced a best throw of 88.13m to finish second behind defending champion Anderson Peters of Grenada (90.54m) and become only the second Indian and first male track and field athlete to win a medal at the World Championships

"A great accomplishment by one of our most distinguished athletes! Congratulations to @Neeraj_chopra1 on winning a historic Silver medal at the #WorldChampionships. This is a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes to Neeraj for his upcoming endeavours," PM Modi tweeted

Hailing the reigning Olympic champion's achievement, Bindra wrote on his Twitter handle, "Many congratulations @Neeraj_chopra1 for your silver at the worlds! You make us proud. Well done and the best for the rest of the season."

Legendary long jumper Anju Bobby George was the first Indian to win a medal -- bronze -- in the World Championships in the 2003 edition in Paris

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Umesh Patel, several sports associations, sportspersons, school children and public representatives welcomed the torch. Chess Grandmaster and Arjuna Awardee Mr. Praveen Thipsay carried the torch and formally handed it over to Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel at a function held at Pt. Deendayal Auditorium here. They also played a game of Chess on the stage. Mr. Baghel handed over this torch to the state's chess player, Woman FIDE Master, Ms. Kiran Agarwal. Ms. Agarwal along with State Chess Association General Secretary Mr. Vinod Rathi will carry this torch to Hyderabad. The 44th Chess Olympiad is being organized in India for the first time as a part of 75th Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. This torch relay will pass through 75 cities of the country with Raipur being the 61st stop. MLA and Chhattisgarh Housing Board President Mr. Kuldeep Juneja, Mayor Mr. Aijaz Dhebar and Chhattisgarh Olympic Association General Secretary Mr. Gurcharan Singh Hora also attended the welcome event.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said “It is a matter of great pride that for the very first time, International Chess Federation (FIDE) has instituted Chess Olympiad torch relay on the lines of Olympic-style tradition. In future Chess Olympiad may be organized in any country; but the torch relay will begin from India. It is a proud moment for the country to host Chess Olympiad. I especially congratulate the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Stalin, for providing a guarantee of Rs.75 crore and world-class infrastructure on behalf of his state to host this proud event. Over 2000 players from 188 countries will participate in the Chess Olympiad to be held in Tamil Nadu's Mahabalipuram.”

He added that the presence of Chess Olympiad torch relay in the state today would act as a great inspiration for our budding chess talents. Referring to Rajnandgaon chess player Ms. Kiran Agarwal, he said that she participated in Olympiad twice between 1986 and 1990. This pride needs to be repeated again. Our Chhattisgarh is also participating in the Olympiad held in Tamil Nadu with Mr. Alankar Bhivgade of Bhilai as one of the judges. Ms. Kiran Agarwal, Mr. Vinod Rathi and Mr. M.K. Chandrashekhar are part of the organizing committee. A total of six players selected from different schools of the state will also participate in the Olympiad.

Speaking about how Chess is being promoted in Chhattisgarh, Mr. Baghel said that on the initiative of All India Chess Federation, work has been started to promote chess in 22 schools of the state. Balod has become the first district in the country to start the ‘Chess in School’ pilot project. Arrangements to play chess will be made in all schools. Chess training has also been started in Aastha School of Dantewada district. He boosted the morale of chess players and hoped that seeing the players participating in this event, other parents would also encourage their children to take interest in chess and other sports.

Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Mr. Umesh Patel said in his address that the torch of the biggest sporting event in the country has reached the soil of Chhattisgarh today, which we welcome wholeheartedly. He informed that the Chess Olympiad is being organized in Mahabalipuram from July 28 to August 10. India, the birthplace of this game, has got the responsibility of hosting this event for the first time. The Chess Olympiad torch relay is passing through 75 cities of the country, reaching its 61st stop i.e. Raipur today. He expressed his gratitude to all the sports federations, sportspersons, public representatives and school children who came to welcome the torch here. Chhattisgarh State Chess Association President Mr. Raghavendra Singhania also addressed the programme. Sports and Youth Welfare Secretary Mr. Neelam Namdev Ekka and Director Mrs. Shweta Srivastava Sinha along with senior departmental officials were also present in the programme.

Adani and GMR buy teams in Ultimate Kho Kho

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI) Corporate giants Adani Group and GMR group have acquired the Gujarat and Telangana franchises respectively in the 'Ultimate Kho Kho' league, which is set to start this year with an aim to promote indigenous sport.

The franchise based kho kho league is promoted by Dabur Group chairman Amit Burman in collaboration with Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI).

"Our experience with the Kabaddi and Boxing League gives us confidence that the Ultimate Kho Kho League will do wonders for this much-loved traditional sport,' Pranav Adani, Director-Adani Enterprises was quoted as saying in a press release.

"Our decision to partner with this league is an extension of our aim to build a world-class ecosystem that nurtures sporting talent, accelerates the sports economy and plays the role of an enabler in India's journey to become a leading sporting nation."

GMR Sports has picked up the Telangana team, to tap on the popularity of kho kho in South India and promote it further.

"Since its inception, over 15 years ago, the company has done pioneering work in growing popular sports such as cricket and other indigenous sports like Kabaddi and Wrestling across India and overseas," said Kiran Kumar Grandhi, Corporate Chairman, GMR Group.

Ultimate Kho Kho will broadcast live on Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) and its dedicated OTT platform SonyLIV.

FIFA World Cup: Airfare to Qatar shoot up 1900% as Dubai expects to fill accommodation shortfall

Considering a shortage of accommodation in Doha for the huge influx of football fans for this year-end’s Fifa World Cup in Qatar, the tourism industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is expecting Dubai and other tourist destinations to be the choice of stay by fans who can then commute for matches.

The airfares to Dubai and Qatar have seen an unprecedented rise of 1900 percent. The reason is the football World Cup. It is scheduled to be held from November 21 and December 18 in Qatar this year. The tourism industry is set for a boom in Qatar and the UAE . Football fans from across the world want to be there during this period.

Around 23.5 million enthusiastic football fans from around the world have applied for the tickets and though Qatar is going to add around 5000 more hotel rooms, there is still going to be a shortage, and countries in the GCC region, especially UAE, are expecting to fill the shortfall.

Authorities in UAE are confident that Dubai will be a place of choice to stay for World Cup visitors from other regions.

People associated with the tourism industry in UAE are expecting that travel from UAE to Qatar will be greatly accelerated during the event as football fans will fly to Doha from UAE to watch the matches, thus resulting in a substantial increase in prices.

Data from airlines show that one-way economy class airfare, which ranges from Dh360 (approx INR 7,604.74) to Dh 3,370 (INR 71,188.66approx) as of May 25, has already increased to Dh 7,110 (INR 150,194.30 approx) on November 20, a day before the start of the mega event.

Currently, UAE carriers Flydubai, Etihad, and Air Arabia and Qatar’s national carrier Qatar Airways operate flights between the two Gulf countries. Recently it was reported that Israel would also request Qatar to operate direct flights between the two countries during the FIFA World Cup.

Raheesh Babu, COO, Musafir.com, said that they are still waiting for more clarity from airlines. They are confident that people will be willing to stay outside of Qatar and visit the country for the matches only. Additionally, they are expecting airlines to significantly increase operations to accommodate the demand.

Although Doha has invested heavily in hotel accommodation and infrastructure for the world’s biggest sporting event, a shortfall remains, meaning many will stop for tournaments in neighbouring Gulf countries. Industry people in UAE are expecting Dubai to be their preferred choice.

Dubai-based realtors have said football fans are paying for short-term rentals in the Emirate. This could mean a bumper tourism season for the GCC, especially the UAE. In Dubai, estate agents are already seeing a surge in demand.

Around 23.5 million enthusiastic football fans from around the world have applied for the ticket sales draw. Most applications have been made by fans living in Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.

Apart from eager applications for the final, the most prestigious matches include Argentina v Mexico, Argentina v Saudi Arabia, England v USA and Poland v Argentina. Ticket applicants will be notified of their fate by email from May 31, 2022, beginning with the scheduled payment period.

Meanwhile, FIFA has told police chiefs of competing countries around the world, at a conference in Doha, that the main security concern of the 2022 World Cup would be controlling hundreds of thousands of football fans in Qatar’s capital.

FIFA Safety Director Helmut Spahn told attendees that securing the most geographically-compact World Cup is one of the tournament’s biggest challenges. The longest distance between any two of the eight stadiums is approximately 70 kilometers. Police representatives from competing countries will assess World Cup stadiums at the conference and evaluate transportation in Doha.

Mumbai: Nikhat Zareen who on Thursday scripted history by clinching the gold medal in the Women’s World Boxing Championships called Salman Khan ‘meri jaan’ recently.

The young boxer made this confession in a recent interview when she was asked if ‘Salman bhai’ congratulated her yet. She said “Kaun bhai? Aapka bhai? Maine kabhi bhai nahi kaha. Come on I never called him ‘bhai’. Logon ka bhai hoga woh, meri jaan hai”.

Sharing the video of the interview, Salman Khan congratulated her for making India proud.

Seeing the tweet of the actor, Zareen wrote, “It’s one of my favourite dreams that have come true”. “Thank you so much for making my win more special”, she added.

Responding to the tweet, Salman Khan wrote, “Just don’t knock me out”.
