school teacher segregates Hindu Muslim students; suspended

Wazirabad: Students of a primary school in Wazirabad were segregated on religious lines. The teacher-in-charge was suspended on Wednesday.

According to Indian Express CB Singh Sehrawat, the teacher who was made in charge of North MCD Boys’ School on July 2 after the principal was transferred, was found guilty following preliminary investigations and penalty proceedings have been initiated against him. A notice was sent to the Director of education in North Delhi Municipal Corporation and head of the school by Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights. It ordered the immediate dissolution of such grouping and said it was against constitutional values. The commission also sought an explanation from the director within two days.

The school has been asked to constitute a committee to investigate the matter and furnish the details and sequence of events that took place leading to the situation.

Though the teacher in charge denied charges, when the Indian Express accessed the school’s attendance register, the names did indeed a show a religious divide. The teacher defended the move by saying reshuffling is a standard procedure. He claimed the decision was taken to ensure “peace, discipline and a good environment”.

The school is run by Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The issue was brought to the notice of MCD zonal office by some teachers.
