Raipur : Another initiative of Chhattisgarh Government to alleviate malnutrition from Bastar : Jaggery to be distributed along with chickpeas to 6.98 lakh families of Bastar Division

New Government led by Chief Minister Mr. Bhupesh Baghel is committed to alleviate malnutrition from tribal-populated Bastar region. All the schemes focused on malnutrition eradication were launched from Bastar region only. Recently launched Suposhan Abhiyan and Scheme of Health Checkup at Haat-Bazars were also started from Bastar. In the same sequence, it was decided in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mr. Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday evening that in Bastar, along with chickpeas, two kg jaggery will also be distributed every month. This decision of state government would directly benefit nearly 6 lakh 98 thousand 188 ration card holder families of Bastar division.

There are nearly 6 lakh 98 thousand families carrying 'antyoday' (pink), special pink, and 'priority' (blue) ration cards. All these families will now get two kg jaggery with chickpeas every month from fair price shops. Chickpeas and jaggery are considered to be beneficial combination for eradicating malnutrition. State Government's decision to distribute jaggery with chickpeas would help in alleviating malnutrition from this region. It is noteworthy that Suposhan Abhiyan is being conducted as pilot project in Bastar and Dantewada districts from June 2019, under which pregnant women, children, adolescent girls are being provided rice, roti, veg curry, salad and laddu as nutritious meal. Children at aanganbadis are being provided bananas and eggs once a week along with ready-to-eat meal, as per diet chart. Women and Child Development Department is now planning to distribute eggs twice a week.

According to the information recieved from Women and Child Development Department, malnutrition rate in Bastar district is 34% while in Dantewada it is 36%. Similarly, malnutrition rate in Bijapur is 39%, 31.96% in Narayanpur, 27.1% in Kanker, 45% in Sukma and malnutrition rate in Kondagaon is 39.36%. State Government's decision to distribute jaggery with chickpeas would benefit one lakh 80 thousand 496 families in Bastar district, 61 thousand 398 families in Bijapur district, and 70 thousand 887 families in Dantewada district, one lakh 54 thousand 491 families in Kanker district, one lakh 25 thousand 401 in Kondagaon district, 30 thousand 606 families in Narayanpur district and 74 thousand 909 families in Sukma district.
