BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta wants list of tainted babus

Mumbai: BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta has instructed all seven Zonal Deputy Municipal Commissioners to prepare a list of all those civic and fire officers who have allowed illegal establishments to run in their civic wards. He has also instructed the DMCs to submit the list of all tainted civic officials and professional complainants who have been involved in the mushrooming of illegal restaurants in the city.

After conducting inspections of several hotels and restaurants, Mehta found that several establishments were blatantly illegal and many more did not even have proper licences and fire safety NOCs; yet they were operating smoothly. Hence the DMCs have been asked to check whether the ward officials from different departments like Building and Factories, Shops and Establishments and Medical Health Officers were working hand in glove with the owners of these shady establishments.

After the Kamala Mills blaze claimed 14 lives, the BMC had cracked down on illegal eateries. In Mumbai, the BMC inspected 795 hotels in two days, of which 447 hotels have been given Inspection Report (IR) and asked to remove all illegal structures. Twelve have been sealed and 135 hotels and restaurants have been demolished for functioning illegally.
